Monteverde, Costa Rica. November 2009
Dear Friend,
Greetings from the Monteverde Conservation League! We are writing once again to wish you a happy holiday season, share with you our greatest achievements throughout the year, and make it possible for you to support the largest private conservation effort in Costa Rica, the Children´s Eternal Rainforest (Bosque Eterno de los Niños, or BEN).This year has been a significant one for the MCL and the BEN. We have made progress in many of our different programs and continue to help the BEN grow thanks to our many dedicated supporters.
Land Purchase
The MCL was able to acquire three new properties to add to the BEN this year, thanks to our many donors and hard working employees. The Olger Badilla Farm was purchased early in the year with an area of 46.4 hectares and a total value of US$58,000. It is located in Cabeceras de Aranjuez on the Pacific slope of the Tilarán Mountain Range, therefore contributing to the goal of creating a biological corridor from Monteverde to the Gulf of Nicoya.
The Ignacio Picado Farm boarders the BEN, is 8.0 hectares in area and was purchased for US$23,000. This property is located in the Cerro Amapala, Sector of San Luis, Monteverde, also located on the Pacific slope of the Tilarán Mountain Range.
The third and final property is located on the Atlantic Slope of the Tilarán Mountain Range, and was donated to the MCL by a group of individuals concerned for the biological corridor located on the property. The Biological Corridor San Juan de Peñas Blancas is located on a 2.2 hectare plot.
Research
The MCL is actively involved in two research projects concerning the fauna of the BEN. The first is a project in partnership with Chester Zoo in Manchester, England, concerning a frog species once thought to be extinct, Lithobates vibicarius (the green-eyed frog). A breeding site of the green-eyed frog was rediscovered by a field guide and tropical biology teacher, Mark Wainwright, while hiking through a section of cloud forest in the BEN 20 years after the specie´s disappearance. Natural history and genetic studies are being performed by the MCLs park guards, maintenance staff, and Chester Zoo to better conserve the species in the future.
The second is a research project concerning the BEN´s mammals. Edgardo Arevalo, former researcher for the MCL, has teamed up with BEN park guards, station managers, maintenance staff, and other employees to re-estimate the size of the BEN´s mammal populations. The study mainly focuses on the following five species: the peccary (Tayassu tajacu), the mountain lion (Puma concolor),the agouti paca (Agouti paca), the tapir (Tapirus bairdii), and the jaguar (Panthera onca). Field employees of the MCL perform monthly transects and take plaster casts of the mammal prints found within them to estimate the number of mammals in the reserve.
Contacting Us
The MCL has designed a new website (www.acmcr.org) that is easier to navigate. You can find information about the MCL, the BEN, and the MCL´s various programs on the website, and please visit it if you would like to apply to volunteer or just keep updated on the happenings in the BEN.
The MCL has also opened a new information center located on the main road in Monteverde. The information center is more visible and makes visiting the Children´s Eternal Rainforest even easier. Please come see us sometime!
Ecotourism
The MCL has taken great leaps to become self-sustainable. Our four visitation sites, Bajo del Tigre, Finca Steller, San Gerardo Field Station, and Pocosol Field Station, have received more visitors this year than ever. Our new Night Hike in Bajo del Tigre has received over 1000 visitors since its opening in May of 2009, and visitation to the San Gerardo Field Station has doubled. Pocosol Field Station now has a new dormitory and kitchen, making it even more pleasant to visit. Proceeds from entrance fees for all sites are allocated toward the conservation, protection, and expansion of the BEN, and people from all over the world can enjoy the unique and wild Costa Rican rainforest at the same time!
Environmental Education
Although the MCL does not have an environmental educator, employees of the MCL understand its importance and have stepped up to the plate. Once per month the MCL employees coordinate an environmental education activity, and normally we try to involve students from various grades or organized groups which can range from 20 to 70 individuals, principally children. We have received support for these activities from: Luna Nueva, Bosques de Chachagua Hotel, Rancho Margot, Boy Scouts, Proyecto Asís, Desafio Adventures, and local supermarkets.
Another significant activity was organized between a group of 5th grade students in Illinois and a school group in La Tigra de San Carlos through the Nature Quilt Project. The exchange focused on water quality and its importance as a natural resource for surrounding communities and the entire world. Children in Illinois and La Tigra learned to asses the health of their water resources and how to keep them clean. Information was exchanged between the two groups with quizzes, photographs, and activity summaries.
Maintenance and Protection
Our maintenance and protection crews continue to bravely protect the BEN. Although there are few, it would be impossible to keep the BEN closed to hunters and squatters and open for its many supporters to visit.
CONELECTRICAS
The Cooperation and Environmental Service Payment Contract between CONELECTRICAS and the MCL has finally been signed! This contract commits CONELECTRICAS to its participation in the protection and conservation activities of natural resources, in addition to the economic collaboration for the protection activities of the MCL.
As you can see, the MCL has been very active this year, and most of these activities could not be done without the support of people like you. Please continue to support the BEN and those who work selflessly to protect it. We only have one world and one chance to assure that our children will be able to enjoy it as we have. The Children´s Eternal Rainforest is for the future, and for our children.
Sincerely,
Yúber Rodríguez
